Episode 32

Silence Isn't Always Strength

Men's mental health doesn't usually get talked about out loud — and that's exactly why this episode of Long Overdue happened. What was supposed to be another conversation about silence, healing, and the pressure men carry turned into something we didn't plan for: one of us wasn't okay, and instead of faking the funk, he let us see it. Raw and uncut, the way we always say we do it.

We started with a question that hit harder than we expected: what's the difference between "I don't want to talk about it" and "I don't know how to talk about it"? For a lot of men, those are the same sentence. The words come out as "I don't want to talk about it," but underneath is something simpler and heavier — nobody ever taught us how. No one ever really sat down and listened long enough for us to figure out the language for what we feel. So we learn to cave inward, and we call it strength.

Then there's the silence that's supposed to protect you but backfires instead. You stay quiet to keep the peace, to avoid the headache, to hold your household down — and somehow that quiet gets turned around on you. "Why aren't you talking to me?" When the truth is you went silent because every time you did talk, it didn't help. That's the trap so many men live in: damned if you speak, damned if you don't, swallowing so much that it builds into the mental weight nobody sees until it's too late. Happy wife, happy life? We're not sure we buy that one. Happy house, happy spouse feels closer to the truth.

But here's what this episode really showed us. It's 2026, and there's no crime in a man feeling something. We'd rather see a tear than a breaking point. You can be the protector, the provider, the one everybody leans on — and still need somebody to guard your truth for a minute. That's what we tried to be for each other in that room. No pressure to explain, no cameras deciding what you're allowed to feel. Just two people telling a brother: whatever you're carrying, it's not a burden to the people who care about you. And by the end, he said the thing he came in not wanting to say. Look at the beautiful thing that turned out.

So if you're the rough, rugged, holding-it-down type reading this — the one who says "I'm good" when you're not — this one's for you. Tell somebody. A friend, a stranger you'll never see again, a page in a journal you crumble up and throw away. Just don't keep it inside. Silence isn't always strength. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is say it out loud.

When was the last time staying silent protected you — and when did it cost you? Drop it in the comments. Somebody reading this needs to hear they're not the only one.
